‘World Turns’ Goes Out With A Bang, Leads Nominations With ‘Boardwalk’, ‘Glee’, ‘Cleveland’
Even though it has been off the air for ten months, the defunct soap opera “As the World Turns” leads with 30 Bryan Award Nominations, including Best Daytime Soap and Most Missed Series at the 11th Annual Bryan Awards were announced yesterday afternoon.
“It was sad to see ‘World Turns’ get cancelled,” said Bryan Awards founder Bryan Curtiss. The show has led with the most nominations multiple times over the years, and with it gone, we lose our anchor.”
The most-nominated primetime show has two fewer nominations with 28, and that is HBO’s freshman breakout prohibition drama “Boardwalk Empire”, about Atlantic City at the dawn of the Prohibition era.
“‘Boardwalk Empire’ was a big critical hit this past year,” Curtiss added. “It could add fuel to the HBO vs. AMC rivalry that is heating up.”
“Mad Men” became the first basic-cable series to win the Drama Series Emmy in 2008, and it is represented at the Bryan Awards with 18 Nominations, including Best Drama.
Fellow AMC drama “Breaking Bad” is absent from the Bryan Awards, because no new episodes aired during the eligibility period, and new AMC series “The Killing” and “The Walking Dead” both reaped New Series and Drama Series nods.
Joining the three AMC dramas in the Drama Series race are “Boardwalk Empire”, “Dexter”, “Friday Night Lights”, and “The Good Wife”.
Joining ATWT in the Best Soap category are the two surviving CBS soaps “The Young and the Restless” (# 1 soap for 24 years in a row) and “The Bold and the Beautiful” (fresh off its third consecutive Daytime Emmy), plus the show that replace ATWT and the longest-running active soap, ABC’s “General Hospital”.
In the Comedy race, “Glee” triumphed with 42 nominations and 14 wins. This year, they have the reciprocal of 42, with 24 nods, including Best Comedy.
Another show set in the Buckeye State ("Glee" is set in a fictionalized version of Lima, Ohio), TV Land’s breakout hit comedy “Hot in Cleveland” received 21 nominations, including Best Comedy and Best New Series, and received almost twice as many nominations in one year than what TV Land has received altogether in the first ten years of the Bryan Awards.
Joining the two Ohio-set Comedies in the race are NBC’s “The Office”, “30 Rock”, ABC’s “Modern Family”, Showtime’s “The Big C”, and Fox’s “Raising Hope.”
Joining “Hot in Cleveland”, “The Walking Dead”, “Boardwalk Empire”, and “The Killing” in the New Series race are “The Big C”, “Game of Thrones”, the updated “Hawaii Five-O”, “Raising Hope”, the Americanized version of “Shameless”, and the breakout reality competition show “The Voice”.
The nominees in the Made for Television Movie or Miniseries category are “Cinema Verite”, “Downton Abbey”, “Mildred Pierce”, “The Sunset Limited”, “Too Big to Fail”, and “Upstairs, Downstairs”.
The nominees in the Variety, Music, or Comedy Series race are “Chelsea Lately”, “The Colbert Report”, “Conan”, “The Daily Show with Jon Stewart”, “Saturday Night Live”, and “Tosh.O”.
The Bryan Awards started out as a hobby in the summer of 2001, and continues to be so. To find out more, go to http://thebryanawards.bravehost.com.
